Overview: When to pick a hall-effect sensor
Hall-effect sensors detect magnetic fields without contact, giving you reliable switching or analogue outputs for proximity, RPM, position and current measurement. For South African makers, students and technicians this means quieter mechanical systems, galvanic isolation from rotating parts, and sensors that tolerate dusty or oily environments better than mechanical switches. If you need non-contact detection for a motor shaft, wheel encoder, brushless DC commutation, or a clamp-style current sensor for power monitoring, a hall-effect device is often the lowest-cost, highest-reliability choice.
