Estimate temperature rise using thermal resistance and power dissipation. Formula: T_junction = T_ambient + (Power_dissipated × Thermal_resistance_total). Example components of thermal resistance include junction-to-case, case-to-heatsink, and heatsink-to-ambient.
Example: A small board dissipates 3 W. If thermal_resistance_total is 10 °C/W, temperature rise = 3 × 10 = 30 °C. If ambient (Samrand summer lab) is 30 °C, expected junction temperature approx. 60 °C.
Fans are typically 12 V or 5 V. Use P = V × I to size power. If a 12 V fan draws 0.2 A, power = 12 × 0.2 = 2.4 W. Ensure your supply and wiring can handle the current-include margin for startup inrush.
For wiring runs in enclosures, calculate voltage drop: V_drop = I × R_wire. Keep wire gauge sufficient to limit drop to a few percent over short Samrand workshop runs.
Start by estimating worst-case power dissipation and ambient temperature. For low-power microcontroller projects (under 2-3 W) passive cooling (small heatsinks, thermal pads) is often sufficient. For single-board computers, power amps or motor drivers, expect 5 W+ and consider a combination of heatsink + fan or heat pipe solutions.
Example 1 - Raspberry Pi style SBC (5-7 W): attach a low-profile aluminium heatsink to the SoC with thermal tape and add a 5 V fan powered from the board USB header or a separate 5 V supply. Example 2 - Motor driver board (15 W): heatsink with thermal adhesive, 12 V fan for forced convection and temperature monitoring with a small NTC or digital sensor.
