Start by estimating the power dissipation of your component (power in watts). Use the simple relation:
P = V x I (for DC circuits); then select a heatsink and cooling arrangement so that Delta-T = P x Rth (°C/W) keeps junction or case temperature within safe margins. For example, a device dissipating 3 W with a heatsink Rth of 5 °C/W yields Delta-T of 15 °C above ambient. In South African ambient temperatures (typical indoor 20-30 °C), plan for worst-case ambient when specifying Rth.
