Heat sinks differ in cost, complexity, and cooling ability. For most hobbyist purposes, off-the-shelf extruded aluminium or stamped/clip-on types are practical and easy to mount, especially for classic TO-220, TO-247, and TO-3P components.
The most important parameter on any heat sink is its thermal resistance: rated as degreesC/W (degrees Celsius per watt). Lower numbers indicate better cooling performance. Key specs include:
For many education and student builds, a resistive load (e.g., linear regulator) may dissipate from 0.5-10W. Select a heat sink to keep the device case below ~80 degreesC ambient, considering South African lab/workshop air temperatures that may often be 25-35 degreesC.
Suppose you're using an LM7805 linear regulator to provide 5V at 1A from 12V input. Power dissipated is calculated as:
Power (W) = (Vin - Vout) x Iout = (12V - 5V) x 1A = 7W
You aim to keep the regulator case below 80 degreesC, with worst-case ambient of 30 degreesC. Max allowable temperature rise: 80 degreesC - 30 degreesC = 50 degreesC.
Heat sink thermal resistance needed (SA):
SA = (Max temp rise) / (Dissipated power) = 50 / 7 ~ 7.1 degreesC/W
Choose a heat sink with a SA of 7 degreesC/W or lower (preferably adding a 20% margin for safety and airflow).
