Specification guidance and compatibility

Practical example: smoothing a 12 V buck converter
If a buck converter specifies 470uF, 25 V low-ESR output cap, choose an electrolytic or solid-polymer with ripple current rating above the converter's output ripple. Combine a 10uF MLCC across the output for high-frequency decoupling. If space is constrained, parallel multiple MLCCs (smaller values) rather than relying on one large part.
