Thermal resistance is usually given in degreesC/W; lower values dissipate more heat (better for higher wattage loads). Choose a form factor compatible with your package-such as TO-220, TO-247, or D2PAK-then match width and height to your board or enclosure constraints. For high-density or compact builds (IoT, LED lighting), ask about slim-profile and low-mass heat sinks suited for confined spaces.
To correctly select bulk heat sinks, consider the expected power dissipation and allowable temperature rise. The basic calculation uses:

Heat sink thermal resistance required = (Maximum device temperature - Ambient temperature) / Power dissipated - Junction-to-case resistance ( degreesC/W)
For example, if you have 50 power MOSFETs (TO-220), each dumping 4W in a 30 degreesC ambient, and need to keep the case below 90 degreesC, with a junction-to-case rating of 2 degreesC/W, the calculation is:
A clip-on aluminium heat sink with a rating below 13 degreesC/W per device is suitable. Always confirm physical fitment and if extra airflow is present, as that improves real-world performance.
