Start by estimating the heat (power loss) your motor will generate. For DC motors, it's often specified in the datasheet, but can be estimated as follows:
Example Formula:
Ploss = I2 x R + (Other losses)
Where I = motor current (A), R = winding resistance (Ohm).
Once you know heat dissipation, select a thermal solution with an adequate thermal resistance (θ). The lower the value, the more heat it can dissipate:
Required total = (Tmax - Tambient)/Ploss
e.g., If allowed winding temp is 120 degreesC, ambient is 35 degreesC, and heat loss is 15W:
total = (120 - 35) / 15 = 5.67 degreesC/W
A university project runs BLDC motors at 10A continuous, winding resistance of 0.3Ohm, generating ~30W of heat per motor. For a lab at 25 degreesC ambient and max winding temp of 100 degreesC:
