Thermal paste (thermal compound, thermal grease) fills microscopic gaps between a heat-producing component and its heatsink to improve heat transfer. For high-performance electronics - overclocked CPUs, high-current MOSFETs, power supplies, and active LED arrays - the choice of the best thermal pastes for electronics can reduce die temperatures by several degrees, improve reliability, and allow smaller cooling solutions.
Different formulations (metallic, ceramic, silicone-based) trade thermal conductivity, electrical conductivity, ease of application, and pump-out behaviour. South African makers, students and technicians should consider availability, lead time, and whether the paste is stocked locally when selecting a product for projects or repair work.
Manufacturers state thermal conductivity in W/m·K (higher is better), and thermal resistance in °C/W under specified conditions. In practice, performance depends on application thickness, surface flatness, and mounting pressure. For compact high-performance designs, prioritise higher thermal conductivity pastes but balance electrical safety and long-term stability.

Thin, even layers are usually optimal. Aim for a bond line thickness of 50-100 micrometres where possible. Excessive paste increases thermal resistance. For CPUs and flat die components, use a pea-size or cross-spread technique depending on the die size. Ensure both surfaces are clean (isopropyl alcohol recommended) and that mounting hardware provides even pressure.
Thermal resistance Rth for a paste layer can be approximated as:
Rth = thickness / (k · A)
Where thickness is in metres, k is thermal conductivity (W/m·K), and A is contact area in m2. Use this to compare how much benefit a higher-k paste yields for your geometry.

Example 1 - Overclocked gaming PC in Johannesburg: The goal is to reduce CPU junction temperature by 5-8°C. A high-conductivity silver-based paste (non-liquid-metal) applied thinly often provides noticeable gains. If the motherboard VRM area runs hot, use a non-conductive ceramic paste on MOSFETs unless the component top is isolated.
