A thermal cutoff switch (or TCO) is a crucial passive safety component designed to permanently open a circuit if a device overheats. Unlike resettable thermal switches, a TCO will disconnect power until it is replaced, helping prevent fires, component damage, or dangerous thermal events in equipment such as power supplies, transformers, appliances, 3D printers, and test setups.
Thermal cutoffs are single-use, temperature-specific fuses. They contain a thermal pellet or solder alloy that melts at a rated point, breaking circuit continuity. Typical South African applications include protection for chargers, motors, transformers, and heating elements where excessive temperature is a risk.

For robust over-temp protection in South African settings, axial lead TCO fuses are most often used, as they are easy to retrofit on power rails. Brands such as Microtemp (NEC), SEFUSE (Schott), and Thermodisc are widely specified and regularly stocked at Communica branches.
