Why Smart Light Switches Are Different from Other Smart Home Devices
When most people start building a smart home, they think about smart bulbs, smart plugs, or voice assistants. But a smart light switch is a different beast. It replaces your existing wall switch, not just a lamp plug or a single bulb. That means it controls the whole lighting circuit, usually the ceiling lights, and it has to work with the wiring and the bulbs you already have.

The Critical Difference: Neutral vs. No-Neutral Switches
Before any purchase, you must determine if your switch box has a neutral wire. In older South African homes, you often see only a live and a switched live wire (and an earth). Many smart switches, especially those with Wi-Fi or that require continuous power for the smart module, need a neutral to operate. Without a neutral, the switch has to leak a small current through the load to stay powered-which can cause LED bulbs to flicker or glow when off.
There are two routes:
- Neutral-required switches: These are the most common and reliable. They need a neutral wire in the switch box. If you have a modern home or a rewired one, you'll likely have this. Brands like Sonoff and Shelly often require a neutral.
- No-neutral switches: These use a capacitor or a special circuit to allow operation without a neutral. They are more expensive and sometimes have limitations (e.g., minimum load wattage). They are essential for older installations.
Check your switch box with a voltage tester (always switch off mains first). If you see two wires going to the switch and a separate bundle of wires capped off, that bundle is likely the neutral.

Dimming Challenges: It’s Not Just About the Switch
If you want dimming, you face a triple compatibility puzzle: switch, bulb type, and dimming method. Most smart switches with dimming capability use either leading-edge or trailing-edge dimming. Leading-edge works with most dimmable LED bulbs and halogen. Trailing-edge is better for LED drivers and can provide a smoother low-end dim.
But the real issue is the bulb. If you buy a smart dimming switch, you must use dimmable bulbs. Not all LEDs are dimmable. And even 'dimmable' LEDs can behave badly with certain switches-they may flicker at low levels or buzz. Always look for a compatibility list from the switch manufacturer, or check the bulb's packaging for dimming compatibility.
Let's illustrate with a South African example: A customer in Johannesburg wanted to dim four dimmable LED downlights in a kitchen. He bought a Sonoff Smart Dimmer (leading-edge). The bulbs were a generic brand. At 20% brightness, they flickered. After switching to bulbs from a well-known brand like Philips or Osram (often stocked at Communica), the flicker disappeared. This is a classic lesson: cheap bulbs can ruin a smart dimming experience.
A rule of thumb: for residential lighting, use leading-edge dimmers with dimmable LEDs. For over-driven dimmable LEDs or where low flicker is essential (like photography), consider trailing-edge or an active dimmer.
