Electrically, the Mini R2 is rated for 10 A resistive loads, but inductive loads (motors, pumps) require a higher inrush current. For a pool pump or a fridge, you should use a contactor or relay-not the Mini R2 directly. This is a critical best practice that many DIYers overlook. A 220 V, 750 W pool pump may draw only 3.4 A, but on startup it can surge to 20 A for milliseconds. The Mini R2’s internal relay is not designed for that. If you must control such a load, consider using the Mini R2 to trigger a contactor coil, which then safely switches the pump.

A schedule that triggers at 6 PM will simply be missed if the power is off at that moment. The device will only execute the schedule when it reconnects to Wi-Fi-but only if the scheduled time has not passed? Actually, the Mini R2 will execute a schedule that was missed? It doesn’t. It only triggers at the exact time if the device is online. So you must design around this.
One practical workaround is to set multiple schedules as fallbacks. For example, if you have a security light that should turn on at 6 PM, set a secondary schedule for 6:30 PM, and another at 7 PM. That way, even if one is missed due to load-shedding, the next one will catch it (assuming power is back). However, this can be wasteful if your schedules overlap. A better approach is to use scene automation with a door/window sensor or a motion sensor to trigger lights based on presence, rather than time. In South Africa, we also have long summer evenings-using sunset-based schedules (available in eWeLink) is more natural than fixed times. But sunset times shift, and the app uses your location to calculate them-ensure your device’s location is set correctly.
If you have multiple Mini R2s, you can group them into scenes that react to a single trigger. For example, a 'Power Return' scene can turn on all your lights after load-shedding so you know power is back. To do this, you need a smart sensor that detects a power outage? Or you can use the eWeLink 'Schedule' to run a scene every 5 minutes? That’s not practical. A better solution is to use the Sonoff POW series (which measures power) to detect power restoration, but that’s a different device. For most users, a simple rule: keep your scenes simple, and avoid relying on time-based triggers during high load-shedding stages. Use manual triggers from the app or physical buttons instead.
Even with the best planning, you’ll occasionally face issues. Here are three frequent scenarios and how to solve them, based on experiences shared by South African users (and our own test bench):
This usually points to a Wi-Fi connectivity problem. First, check if the device has power. Then, power-cycle the Mini R2 by switching off the circuit breaker for 30 seconds. If it reconnects automatically, the issue was a temporary network glitch. If not, you may need to re-pair the device. To improve long-term stability, consider assigning a static IP address to the Mini R2 in your router’s DHCP settings-this prevents it from being dropped when the lease expires. Also, reduce the number of devices on your 2.4 GHz network if you have many IoT gadgets-some routers choke with more than 20 connections.
If a scene triggers sometimes but not others, check the trigger condition. For example, if you use a sensor, verify its battery level and range. In South Africa, many smart sensors are placed outdoors, but the Mini R2 is indoors-ensure they are within range. Also, scenes that rely on multiple devices require all those devices to be online. If any one is offline, the scene may fail silently. The eWeLink app does not always notify you. A workaround is to create a scene that triggers a notification if a device goes offline, using the 'Device status' condition.
If you’re using the app to toggle the switch and it takes 2-3 seconds, that’s actually normal for cloud-based control. The signal goes from your phone to the eWeLink server (often in China) and back to the device. For instant response, you need to use a local control method. The Mini R2 supports LAN mode in eWeLink-enable it in device settings. This allows the app to communicate directly with the device over your local network, cutting latency significantly. However, LAN mode only works when your phone and the device are on the same Wi-Fi network. For true local automation without the internet, you’d need to flash the device with Tasmota or ESPHome firmware-a popular hack but not officially supported. If you’re comfortable with that, many South African makers buy the Mini R2 specifically for this. For a plug-and-play experience, stick to the official firmware.
The Mini R2 works natively with eWeLink, but it also integrates with Google Home and Amazon Alexa (as well as IFTTT) via the eWeLink cloud. This means you can voice-control your switches or incorporate them into broader routines. In South Africa, Google Home is more common than Alexa, but both work well. One best practice: keep your firmware updated to ensure the latest security patches and features. The eWeLink app will prompt you when an update is available.
