To size a heat sink, estimate the maximum allowable temperature rise and compute the needed thermal resistance (Rth, in °C/W). The basic formula is:
Rth_total = (T_junction_max - T_ambient) / P_dissipated
Where T_junction_max is the maximum device junction temperature, T_ambient is worst-case ambient, and P_dissipated is power in watts. Subtract package and interface resistances to obtain the heat sink Rth.
Assume a regulator dissipates 6 W, junction limit 125°C and worst ambient 35°C.
Rth_total = (125 - 35) / 6 = 90 / 6 = 15 °C/W
If the package and thermal interface contribute 3 °C/W, the heat sink must be roughly 12 °C/W or better. Choose a heat sink type (extruded or skived) and consider adding a small fan to reduce required Rth.
If temperatures run high after installing a heat sink, walk through these checks:
