Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP) cables with solid conductors use a single, continuous copper wire per conductor (rather than stranded bundles) and are finished with a black outer jacket. They are commonly used for fixed network runs in walls, conduits, trunking, and between equipment rooms where permanence, signal integrity, and clean aesthetics are important. This guide explains practical benefits, selection criteria, installation notes, and real-world South African considerations when choosing solid black UTP for projects.
Solid conductors have lower DC resistance and more consistent pair geometry than stranded cables, which helps with performance over longer permanent runs. Stranded cables are more flexible and suited to patch leads. For horizontal cabling, risers, and vertical backbone runs, solid conductor UTP is industry-preferred for its stability and termination reliability.
A black outer jacket provides a discreet appearance in commercial interiors, outdoor conduit routes, and AV installations where visible cable runs should blend with dark ceilings or ducting. Black jackets also can reduce apparent soiling and UV-related discoloration in certain environments, though UV resistance depends on the specific compound used by the manufacturer.
When specifying UTP, select the appropriate category (Cat5e, Cat6, Cat6A, Cat7-equivalents) depending on required bandwidth and alien crosstalk tolerance. Solid conductor cables are available across these categories. Key electrical specs to compare are bandwidth (MHz), insertion loss, NEXT (near-end crosstalk), and return loss. For most modern LANs, Cat6 or Cat6A solid UTP is common for gigabit and 10 Gigabit segments respectively.

Standard Ethernet over UTP follows a 100 m channel limit for horizontal cabling (including patch leads). Loss and crosstalk increase with length; solid conductors typically show lower insertion loss per metre than stranded for the same gauge, giving marginally better margin at long runs. When sizing links, remember: total channel length = horizontal cable + patch leads. For PoE loads calculate power loss using Ohm's law:
Voltage drop (V) = I (A) x R (Ohm). Example: for PoE Type 3 delivering 30 W at 56 V, current ~ 0.54 A. With conductor loop resistance of 0.188 Ohm/100 m (approx for 24 AWG solid), a 100 m run yields voltage drop ~ 0.54 x 0.188 ~ 0.10 V (single conductor; consider pair and return path when computing real losses).

Use solid-to-solid terminations at patch panels and keystone jacks; avoid punching down stranded into solid-rated jacks unless explicitly supported.

Choose the correct jacket for the installation: PVC for indoor dry areas, LSZH where low-smoke behaviour is required, and PE or UV-stabilised compounds for exposed outdoor runs. A black jacket can be supplied in these compounds; always confirm the jacket material for fire and outdoor requirements.
Common solid UTP gauges are 24 AWG and 23 AWG. Thicker (23 AWG) conductors typically reduce attenuation and are preferable for Cat6A/10Gb links. Pair twist consistency affects NEXT and return loss - purchase cables from reputable manufacturers with published datasheets.
Use keystone jacks and patch panels rated for solid conductors and the cable category. For field termination, a proper impact punch-down tool and verification tester (certifier or at least a cable tester) will prevent costly rework.

Solid cable is less tolerant of repeated flexing and sharp bends. Maintain bend radii and avoid tight staples. Excessive crushing can increase NEXT and insertion loss; replace damaged sections rather than attempting repairs with connectors that reduce category performance.
Punching down stranded into a solid-rated jack or using improper connectors can cause intermittent links. Use appropriate keystones or field-terminate using RJ45 crimp boots and connectors specifically marked for solid conductors.
Use a cable tester to validate continuity and pair mapping. For critical installs use a Level II tester or certifier to check bandwidth, NEXT, return loss, and length. Keep test reports and label both ends of each run for maintenance.
