Heat sinks are passive components designed to dissipate excess heat from semiconductors like voltage regulators, power transistors, LEDs, and microcontrollers. For more demanding applications or multiple regulators/LEDs, bigger extruded aluminium profiles can be used, often available in lengths sold by the centimetre at local stores.
Step 1: Estimate Power Dissipation
Use this formula to calculate the heat (in Watts) your device will generate:
Power_Dissipated (W) = (Vin - Vout) x Iload
E.g., using a 7805 regulator with Vin = 12V, Vout = 5V, Iload = 0.5A:
Power_Dissipated = (12V - 5V) x 0.5A = 3.5W
Step 2: Choose a heat sink with Sufficient Thermal Resistance (SA):
Using the above:
Tmax = 90 degreesC, Ta = 30 degreesC, Power = 3.5W:
SA required = (90 - 30) / 3.5 = ~17 degreesC/W
Choose a heat sink rated at 15 degreesC/W or lower for best results.
