Match the magnet's face area and thickness to the clamping surface. A thin, high-grade disc may have weaker hold on a large gap than a thicker, lower-grade block because air gaps dramatically reduce holding force.

Neodymium magnets are powerful: fingers can be pinched between magnets or between a magnet and steel. Small magnets are a swallowing hazard for children and pets - two swallowed magnets can attract across tissue and cause injury. Place multiple neodymium block magnets under a sacrificial board to hold thin metal templates or fixtures. Use larger face-area magnets to reduce the effect of small gaps and ensure even clamping across the template.
Embed ring magnets into a printed hub and mating housing to create a contactless coupling. Use matching ring dimensions and ensure axial alignment; a small air gap can be tolerated but reduces torque transfer.
