12V PCB relays are electromechanical switching devices that let low-voltage control circuits operate higher-voltage or higher-current loads. Consideration: For frequent switching of DC motors consider a purpose-built motor driver or contactor instead of a standard PCB relay to extend life and reduce arcing; relays remain useful for auxiliary systems and low-switching-frequency tasks.
A microcontroller GPIO cannot drive a 12V relay coil directly. Typical interface components include NPN transistors (e.g., 2N2222), MOSFETs, or dedicated relay driver ICs. Always fit a flyback diode across the coil (e.g., 1N400x) and use base/gate resistors and a pull-down on the driver to prevent accidental activation during boot.
Use Ohm's law to estimate coil current: I = V / R (where R is coil resistance). For a 12V coil with 400 ohms coil resistance, I = 12 / 400 = 0.03A (30mA). Ensure your transistor can handle the coil current and include a flyback diode across the coil.
